Three Parents Share the Burden

Return to Planning a Fitting Celebration of a Young Man's Life

or Transformation Through Loss and Crisis

This picture is one of my favorites from the memorial service because it shows Eli's mother, Betsy, in the middle, his father, Rob, on the right, and his step-father, Dave, on the left, carrying a wooden vase they used as an urn.

At the point in the service when it was time to take the vase to the ocean, Rob, who had flown in from Hawaii, and Betsy slowly got up. It was then that Rob reached down and took Dave's hand, inviting him to join them in the walk to the ocean. It would be wonderful if all families could reach out to one another in times of grief despite the differences between them.
